#iitbelections

It was election season with a twist! The usual run-of-the-mill insti elections were made more spicy this time around by the introduction of IB (independent bodies like MI, TF etc) heads to be elected in a surprise move by the profs in the SAC council to have a "more democratic" election and transparent selection of these IB honchos. This, I believe is a wrong move since you are letting the fate of the biggest cultural/technical/ecell-ial event of IIT Bombay to the hands of people like me who don't give a damn or people like my sadist friends who have voted exactly for the other candidates whom these IBs wanted to be elected. If the passing out council had been a bit more serious and responsible, they would not have agreed to implement this in the best interests of the insti and the IBs.

Up to last year, the MI/TF/Ecell OCs would be chosen by the end of Feb and the CGs/Managers would be selected after infinite rounds of horrendous interviews inevitably on the day of the elections. This way, you could get all the wannabe managers and CGs to machaofy for a given candidate, especially if the said candidate was a part of the IB team in a past life.

The authors of this blog also would like to bring attention to a new class of people - breed, if you will - who have a lifetime of about 3-4 days - 2 before the election D-Day and one after (in case their candidate won) - who support their closest friends and peers and machaofy among random people or vice versa. These people are disguised as the other guy you meet, you'll never suspect him(/her I'm not gender biased), whom you would have never ever seen in your life, but he would machaofy against someone you strongly believe in. This class of people also involve many wannabe-UG matkas who generally suck the life out of you, but stick close when they want to machaofy polt. Now, I have 2 M.Tech students in my wing, who are well, the matka next door, not interacting (thank god, I guess) and also having been asked to move out by a set of thirdies who wanted to be single. I saw one of these same thirdies machaofying for a candidate with him. Sheesh! Treating them like scum (I'm against this too, but it is 20 against 1) throughout the year and getting all comfy with them just for elections! infi max gandagi!

But I guess that is what elections do to you. You and your closest friend might believe in two different candidates, people whom you would have met once, or people who are mere acquaintances, or perhaps you played with them in inter-IIT or would have been to Chaos together, and you end up ruining your relations with some of the best people you meet here in insti. And the horrible stories you hear! For instance 2 of the candidates were TAs for courses and apparently tried to bribe freshies with marks to vote for them. All in all, I am very happy with the election results, though I still believe both GSAA (UG) candidates were equally good for the post.

One good thing that came out of elections this year was undoubtedly the creation of the "real election dope" satire blog maintained be a certain "fakeelectionofficer". Now, this blog ridiculed every contestant and tried to bring to light some kingpins (no offence to RoSi) and had a very light-hearted view over the elections. You can see the current status of the blog due to it's being "banned" by the higher authorities just because they said stuff which was in a lighter vein. Perhaps they shouldn't have mentioned stuff about a particular person or even hacked into (used the ID in some way but not hacked to be perfectly honest) GSAA's account and mailed it to every student in the insti, but still, "the authorities" have tried to implement "democracy" by killing free speech saying "it was the opinion of only a few people" especially when people are still angry about not being allowed the use of dark and isolated places, which I believe should not exist in an insti which is so frequently under threat from panthers.
